Since many are busy during Art Week, we invite you to join us for a special event just one week later in a relaxed setting. On June 27th, we will host an event at Projektraum M54 (Mörsbergerstrasse 54, Basel) to dig into our own archive and explore archives as living, political, and collective spaces. Who decides which stories are preserved, and which are silenced? How is knowledge preserved and made accessible?
Through conversations, listening sessions, and a shared space for encounter, the program approaches archives beyond institutions, from oral histories and fiction to personal memory, sound, and everyday forms of knowledge. Bringing together artists, researchers, and cultural practitioners, the event invites visitors to reflect on accessibility, storytelling, and the power structures embedded in cultural memory. The program is conceived as an open format, with the possibility of joining individual program points throughout the day.
Follow the thoughts of Tasnim Baghdadi, co-director and curator of Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Lucie Kolb, professor of Critical Publishing and researcher, as well as Femi Johnson, Digital Heritage Specialist at the Museum of West African Art during the panel talk. Or get cozy listening to the musical program curated by less than three (<3).You can find all information about this Open Research Day here. The folder will be updated continuously with program details. For this occasion, we will open our own archive throughout the day, making materials, processes, and research approaches publicly accessible.
We are excited to announce an upcoming mediation program developed in collaboration with Liste Art Fair. During art fairs, everyone is searching for something: the next event, the next encounter, the next deal, the next party, or the newest edition of fair merch. Looking for? invites visitors, in the midst of this rush, to slow down and consider questions of inequality, labor, economic extraction, and identity that are often rendered invisible. Building upon the themes of our first publication, This Is Not A Guidebook, we have created a site-specific edition for Liste.
Through a critical yet playful lens, Looking for? takes the form of a leaflet that guides you, scavenger hunt style, through the fair against the grain. Through a series of questions, visitors are invited to unpack the hidden mechanisms of power, hierarchy, and access operating behind the spectacle of the art market.
There are three ways to participate:
Visit the Liste infodesk for a copy of the leaflet and free entry. (P.S. Entry is also free from 19:00 onward.) You can then follow the leaflet independently through the fair. Liste is open to the public from June 15 to 21. More information, including opening hours, can be found here: Liste visitor information
Or join us for a special guided tour during the fair, taking place on Saturday, June 20, from 4 to 5 pm. The tour will be held in English and German, with additional languages possible upon request. Registration for the tour grants access to the fair for the duration of the tour. The meeting point is in the foyer at the VIP Desk. More information and registration: Tour registration
Or simply use the digital version below. Note that the digital version does not grant free entry.
Hybrid Project Space was asked by the Kunstmuseum Basel to comment on a work within the exhibition ‘Carrie Mae Weems: The Evidence of Things Not Seen’. We took a closer look at ‘Mirror, Mirror’, a photograph and text work from 1987 which addresses topics such as racism and stereotypes that are still relevant today.
Im April nahmen wir an „We Are Foreign and We Are Everywhere: Networks for Systemic Change“ teil, einem CoCreate-Workshop im CIVIC.

‘Have a Seat – We Need to Talk!’ consisted of an interactive installation at kHaus during Kunsttage 2024, inviting the public to engage in dialogue about accessibility and diversity in art spaces. The event took inspiration from the insights gained at «This is not a Guided Tour», which we offered during Kunsttage 2023.
For the event, we prepared a series of custom printed stools and tote bags, each one displaying one of five questions meant to trigger critical conversations regarding institutions, power structures, critique among other topics. Visitors were invited to sit down and engage each other or members of Hybrid Project Space in a short ‘speed-dating’ round using these questions.

Each event was concluded by a short live performance by either Tracy September or Leila Moon.
The event featured a custom designed scenography – each question appeared in a different, unexpected format: a napkin, a plate, or a dessert cup. A huge shout out to Ieva Zuklyte of atelier uuu for teaching us how to tuft and helping us out with the fabulous tablecloth!

During Art Basel week, we released our first publication as part of the Basel Social Club. The invitation to join the Basel Social Club raised questions about accessibility at such an event and in these spaces. These questions can now be found in THIS IS NOT A GUIDEBOOK and applied to various art spaces. The handy booklet fits into any pocket, leaves room for personal thoughts, and critically questions art spaces. If you couldn’t secure a booklet, you can find a free digital version here or send us an email – there are still a few copies available.

Built on the content of THIS IS NOT A GUIDEBOOK, we were able to implement a mediation format during Kunsttage Basel. Three tours through three different art institutions, hosted by people from our circle, were the result. With Subeer Ismail, we visited Ausstellungsraum Klingental, with Va-Bene Elikem Fiatsi Kunstmuseum Basel, and with Elisa da Costa gallery STAMPA. Equipped with the booklet and a critical eye, participants answered the question in subsequent discussions of who cannot be in these spaces. The collected results will be published next year.

This summer, Zanele Muholi exhibited at the Kunstmuseum Luzern. Their works showcase the diversity of the Black, queer community that surrounds them and challenges the binary thinking system of our society. We had the great opportunity to have an extented conversation with Zanele Muholi, gaining insights into the approach, motivations, and interests of the visual activist.

Shortly thereafter, we conducted a workshop with students from the Bachelor Fine Arts program at HGK FHNW. In a collaborative discussion in small groups, questions about inclusion were raised and explored. What does inclusion mean from the perspective of artists? What language is spoken in relation to art? When were you last excluded or excluded someone else? Is there also a positive side to exclusion?
